Discussion of a Retrospective Matched-Pair Analysis Comparing Patients in Cardiogenic Shock Treated with Balloon Pump and the Impella® Heart Pump

Seth Bilazarian, MD, discusses a recent paper published in Circulation by Drs. Benedikt Schrage, Karim Ibrahim, et al. on a retrospective matched-pair analysis comparing patients in cardiogenic shock treated with balloon pump and the Impella® heart pump. Dr. Bilazarian highlights several limitations of the analysis, which used a matched-pair analysis to “harmonize baseline characteristics” of Impella-treated patients with patients included in the IABP-SHOCK II trial.
